The ancient capital of Nara is known for the deer wandering Nara Park and the Great Buddha of Todaiji Temple—but there’s so much more. This itinerary takes you on a leisurely tour of old temples and shrines and historic sites in Kashihara, Sakurai, Asuka, and other parts of what is known as ‘Middle South Nara’, an area said to be the birthplace of Japanese culture. A favorite culturally significant spot of mine is Horyuji Temple, the world’s oldest wooden building. Far from the noise of the big city, take time from your busy trip to go where life is slow and tourists are still few and far between.
